3 Keys to Building Lasting Relationships with Your Visitors
Building relationships and connecting with your visitors, readers and customers can sometimes be challenging. Your site structure has some to do with how people flow from one point to another, but what key ingredients build lasting relationships with those who frequent your site?
Recently I had a young lady send me an email, not long after leaving a comment on one of my posts. I have to be honest, her question took me back a little bit. Even though she beat me to the punch, and even though her question was in regards to something I already do with all my marketing, I had never received an email asking the question of "Why it took so long." I won't spill the beans just yet, but read on and I will explain a little further down.
3 Keys to Building Lasting Relationships with Your Visitors:
- Develop your site with Purpose. Every marketer, Affiliate, Internet, Network, whatever your discipline, should have a "Purpose" that directs the content, banners, links, categories, widgets or whatever is displayed on your site. When people find YOU, do they see one big ad, or do they perceive value by how your site meshes?
Let me give a quick example: If you are an Affiliate Marketer and you have a banner display that promotes a program or product you sell, the purpose of that banner, from your perspective, may be to add income to your bottom line, but if that banner display doesn't match your overall theme, if that banner program or product is not interwoven within your content, page titles or links, then your visitors may see that as just another advertisement.
I visited a site recently where the theme and purpose was all about healthy living, actually a very nice site, but right at the top, on the right side, was a long affiliate banner for Free Web Hosting. I thought that was kind of odd, let alone it was nearly 5 inches tall. Does web hosting and Healthy Living match? Do other visitors wonder the same question? First impressions count, most times you only have about 3 seconds to convince your visitor to stay, how do you use those 3 seconds? - Write with Passion: Most marketers understand that "Content" is king, but what about content draws your readers in? What is it that keeps someone on your site for more than 15 minutes, reading, learning and commenting? It's your "Passion"!! Yes, what you write about, how you spell or misspell words and the overall flow makes a difference but to really draw someone in and keep them coming back for more, you have to relate with that person on a different level. You have to imagine, while your typing, that you are right in front of them talking away, smiling, waving your hands with gestures, persuading them that what you are saying can make a difference.
If your words are not pulling your readers in, it might be a reason that returning visitors are down, comments are only left once in a while and your RSS readership hasn't reached the level you are seeking. Passion can be seen and felt, even through words, master it and you might just see a new level of connection with your target market. - Build Relationships through Persistence: If you read my last post, "Instilling Leadership in our Children", then these three points might just ring a bell. These are the 3 P's, Purpose, Passion and Persistence, that I use to build my business and teach my kids to make them better leaders in our community. But "Persistence" is a trait that takes focus and consistency before the fruits of your labor begin to emerge.
This is where my story continues from the beginning of this post. I mentioned earlier that I had received an email from a young lady who had left a comment on one of my posts. Her question was, "Mike, I notice you responded to all the other commenters on your post, but not mine, how come?" WOW, what an email.
You see, she had been a constant visitor, reading, learning and then commenting, but to her, my response to her comment meant something. It meant a connection, one that she was looking for. How many of your visitors leave a comment and then check back the next day to see if you responded? Might be more than you think.
What was great about this email was that responding with a comment to my commenters has always been my practice. If they took the time to share their thoughts, views or opinions, I want to take the time to thank them and share any more advice I can. That is how Relationships are built. Luckily this young lady beat me to the punch, I was a little behind in responding to some comments, and a few hours later she would have seen my response.
Persistence doesn't have to mean that you create posts or pages 5 times a week, it means that the little things make big differences when building relationships with your visitors. Those visitors might someday be business partners, customers or life long friends, but first you have to develop those relationships.
Try leaving a comment response to every person who took the time and effort to share their thoughts about your content and if you really want to Build a Lasting Relationship, visit their site if you are able or send them a personal email thanking them for their time and comment.
Passion-Purpose-Persistence, learn how to develop your marketing plan with these three philosophies
Sincerely,
Mike Witt

Great post Mike!!! Purpose, passion, and persistence... Not only an excellent way to connect with your readers, but a simple blueprint for success in ANYTHING - especially online! Keep 'em coming Mike!
Nice article! Responding to readers that comment on your blog is very important to building relationships. Relationships are key to making anything successful. It doesn't matter if you are a blogger, salesperson, or stay-at-home mom. You need to build good relationships to survive.
Hey Billy,
Thanks for the great comment, it's nice to see you again. You are right, life, business, kids, when you follow a blueprint that works, everything comes together.
Thanks for stopping by, have a great holiday my friend!!
Mike
Hi Jeff,
Thank you for the comment, I appreciate that very much. I couldn't have said it any better myself.
Relationships build stability and targeted traffic is too valuable to not utilize these tools. Readers want connection, they want someone to guide them and teach them, what better way then taking the time to comment back, visit their site and provide value and expertise.
Thanks Jeff, great to see you again,
Mike Witt
Hey Mike,
Well done. No only did you write about some important topics but you used your points in this article. It flows very well.

Hi Mike, really enjoyed your post.
The gal who wrote about not getting a comment from you, was showing that what you have to say is important to her. Your comments come from the heart--thoughtful and sincere and those are qualities that are hard to fake. I would think anyone would want to follow you in your business.
Keep up the good work, Mike.
Judy

Hi Judy,
Thank you for the comment, I appreciate that a ton. Her email did show that, and I am glad that I was a little behind that day, otherwise she might not have connected in the way she did.
Thanks for the thumbs up, and thanks for taking the time to stop by and share your thoughts,
Mike Witt
Mike,
You remind us of what it means to be personable and respectful. When people take the time to leave you a comment it is common courtesy to respond. It's like when you're in a conversation with someone in person . . . you don't just stare at them blankly and then walk away, right?
The other thing that comes to mind is that we all want to be recognized . . . for who we are, what we do, and when you take the time to come back and read your posts and offer a comment in return it creates a closer bond with your readers.
Well done,
Theresa
Hi Theresa,
I appreciate your comment, it is right on. It's easy to look at the internet as a sterile, peopleless medium when buidling a business. When you realize that there are people behind the clicks, then it is much easier to apply offline habits online. Like you say, you wouldn't just walk away from someone talking to you face to face, why would you online.
The little things make big differences when building relationships, really in any setting.
Theresa, thanks for taking the time to comment and connect, it's always great to see, we both have some of the same passions.
Happy Holiday,
Mike Witt

I enjoy reading your stuff. You appear to be experienced at internet marketing. I have one question for you. It's one of those situations where I've wanted an answer to a question but afraid to ask. Here's my question.
How do you stand out from the thousands of internet marketers doing the attraction marketing thing? How do you stand above the crowd?
Sincerely,
Mick Hunt
Hi Mick,
First, thank you for taking the time to comment, I am glad that you enjoy visiting my site.
You mention the word expert and although that brings a smile to my face, I don't think of myself as an expert. To me an expert is someone who has arrived at the end of their journey, but with all forms of marketing, including the Internet, nothing ever really ends, it changes and evolves. I consider myself a learner and a student, that is the mind set it takes to evolve within yourself.
Never be afraid to ask, all that does is delay you knowing the answer, and you can never get back time :-). Your question is an excellent one.
First, Attraciton Marketing, although it is a process, is not about a product or program, it's about YOU !! There is only one you in this world, you are Unique, and the way you stand out is by providing people more of what YOU have to offer.
The true secret behind Attraction Marketing is not about promoting other people's systems or products as an Affiliate, ultimately it's about teaching you how to "Develop Your Own Attraction System", that has your name on it, your face on it and that can be used to Attract people to YOU!
That is how you Stand Out In The Crowd. In the beginning, while you are learning and building, it may not feel that way, but that is ok, if you continue to develop yourself, your plan, your target market, YOUR system, the day will come where the crowd around you transforms into a crowd seeking what you have.
Mick, I hope that I have helped some with my answer. Attraction Marketing is truly the best way to develop a long term sustainable business, online or offline, but it is a process, one that takes a little out of the box thinking, help from others, and continued learning so that you are always developing yourself first and foremost.
Thanks Mick, I appreciate your question and honesty, hopefully I helped in some way,
Mike Witt

Your so right! I was so surprised when I recieved a 3 part comment on my blog and a girl who had been reading my blog for sometime also left a comment, I appreciated it SO much. It works both ways, when they see your very involved and respond back they appreciate it as well, more than we realize! It's like in the real world, if someone responded to something you said, you wouldn't just turn around and walk away, you would listen to what they had to say and the communication and relationship would grow, as it should with readers on your blog.
Great Post!!
